Samuel enjoys drawing, painting, coloring.  But when I want him to practice his letters, he is never very excited, and always whines for me to help him and tells me he can’t do it.  So the other day, after painting a picture of a “great big white shark” he told me to write his name on it.  “No, you do it, Samuel!”  “Will you help me?”  “Nope, you do it yourself.”  “But I don’t know how!!”  “Yes you do.  What are the letters in your name?”  “S-A-M-U-E-L.”  “Ok, so start with S.”  Then I listened in surprise as he said each letter slowly, one at a time.  “How about all my name with the R and the Gs?”  “Ok, I will tell you those letters if you need help.”  “B-R-I-G-G . . . “  “Two Gs?!  I have two Gs?!”  {The excitement of that never gets old for him.}

Then he showed me the paper.  Um, I was blown away.  Ok ok, I am very aware kids his age do this easily.  They also color in the lines.  Draw detailed pictures with facial features and body parts.  And sit still.  Or so I’ve heard.  But this was a big deal for Samuel.  We were very proud and promptly took a picture before sticking it on the fridge.  Way to go, Sammo!!

Right, you can’t actually see anything in that picture.  So here are the close ups.

VIP Christmas Program (Now with Video!)

December 29th, 2010 Annelise Posted in Christmas, Mr. Sammers, preschool, proud mama, videos No Comments »

December 21, 2010

So after a busy day in the snow, we got ready for Samuel’s very first preschool program.  Samuel was very excited.  So was I.  It’s one of those things that makes me feel like a real parent.  I got to walk Sam over to where all the kids were meeting while Erik and Owen got us some second row seats.  After a few minutes, the kids came marching out, ready to share their usual morning songs and routine.  After that, they went off stage and came back marching in like toy soldiers.  They recited something from Babes in Toyland, and then sang several Christmas songs, including motions, actions, and a few props.  Samuel knew most of the stuff pretty well.  (I had been hearing him practice Jingle Bells and Up On the House Top for weeks.)  My favorite part was when he held his belly and leaned back for “Oh ho ho, who wouldn’t go?”  When all the songs were done, we had a surprise visit from Santa and Mrs Claus.  All of the preschool kids got to visit with them.  After that, we grabbed some cookies, looked around and collected Sam’s Christmas art pieces hanging on the wall, and brought home the present he had made and wrapped for us.

I still don’t know how my Sam Baby got so grown up.  It was such a delight to watch him interact and perform.  In between each act, Sam was always chatting with someone, and at the end Erik wondered what Sam could possibly have to say, and say so much of!  I sure love this bright, cheery, outgoing little man of mine!

Marbles

November 7, 2010

One evening while I made dinner, Erik and the boys got out the marbles! These are Erik’s from when he was a kid, and both Sam and Owen are wild about them. I’ve gotten out 4 or 5 pieces at a time before, and built a small tower. But this was the real deal! All THREE boys had fun. ;) And it was such a delight to stand in the doorway and be an observer. Look at how into Erik is. Look at Owen’s hat that he won’t go a day without wearing. Look at Sam who insists on dressing himself. Look at how intense all of them are, and how seriously they are taking their fun. Look at how blessed I am to call all three of these guys mine! Love love love.

Artsy Fartsy Sammydoodle

Samuel’s lines and letters have started turning into pictures with stories.  It’s been really fun watch Sam hone his fine motor skills and create his perfect preschooler works of art.

This is some sidewalk art from last week.  “Here’s the knight, and this is his sword and his shield.”  (Can you see it?  Sword on the left, then knight’s head and face with two legs no arms, and shield on the right.)

And on Sunday, while trying to keep Sam distracted with something quiet so we could watch conference, I started cutting out pumpkins.  As I cut out different shapes so he could create his own jack-o-lanterns, Sam got to work with his marker on the first pumpkin.  He did this on his own, without any direction.  Including the ”green eyebrowers and scary things on his face.”

We ended up cutting out more Halloween things.  Sam wanted “a Sam and Owen jackolatter for the Mommy and Daddy jackolatter” and a mouth that said “Woooooo” for his ghost.  And then I cut out pieces for a witch and Samuel put it together and decorated it himself.  When we finished, Samuel was happy to hang his creations for display and we were both pretty proud of his work.

Mr. Independent

September 22nd, 2010 Annelise Posted in Mr. Sammers, proud mama 2 Comments »

Samuel has always been independent.  Always.  Sometimes it works in my favor.  Like when I’m not quite ready to get out of bed at 6:20 am.  Sam manages just fine without Mom around.

We had been talking about miracles in Primary.  I came down to Sam’s car creation one morning, “Look Mom, I made a miracle!”  I’m not quite sure where the connection was, but it still made me smile.

Jumpin’ Jacks

July 30th, 2010 Annelise Posted in outings, proud mama, summer, videos No Comments »

Sam begs to go to Jumpin’ Jacks almost every day.  We have been several times, but definitely not recently.  Last Wednesday was a good day for an outing, so off we went.  I was terrified to go by myself with the two boys.  I imagined Owen on my hip with his death grip on my arm while Sam screamed that he needed my help and I injured myself trying to keep everyone happy.  Well, I was right . . . I sprained my ankle and burned my arm.  Loser.  But I was dead wrong about the boys.  Owen flippin’ loved it.  He ran around, jumped, bounced, face planted more times than I could count, threw himself onto his back over and over so he could lie there watching everyone play around him, and laughed his little guts to pieces.  And Sam didn’t need one bit of help from his mom.  He climbed and slid and blew through the whole place effortlessly.  He even managed to steer AND reach the pedals on the racecar game.  What a super fun afternoon with my two favorites.

Secret Message

July 2nd, 2010 Annelise Posted in learning, Mr. Sammers, proud mama, something new 2 Comments »

Samuel was having fun with a pile of papers, some markers, and lots of stickers while I got some work done and Owen napped.  After a few different art pieces, Sam told me he needed to write a secret message to Erik.  I asked him what the message was, and he told me, “I’m not telling.  It’s a secret.”  Der, Mom.  When he was done, I asked again.  I know how good Sam is at secrets.  “It’s a secret message for Daddy.”  “Cool.  Can you tell me what it says?”  “It says ‘R’ ‘D’ and ‘O’ for octopus.”  I took a look at the secret message.  I was so pleased I giggled and then gave Sam a high-five.  He’s never written letters before.  I guess he’s never had a secret message he needed to get to Agent Dad.  I only wish he hadn’t written in invisible ink [Color Wonder marker on regular paper] so we non-spies could read it better.  Clever kid.  Love him.

Gymnastics

April 30th, 2010 Annelise Posted in gymnastics, Mr. Sammers, proud mama, videos No Comments »

We recently finished our fifth round of gymnastic classes.  But this was the first time there was a performance!  Samuel got his very own t-shirt (that he asks to wear every single day) and got to show off what he has learned with some of the other kids.  Samuel was beyond excited to show Daddy all his gymnastics tricks and bring cookies to share with his gymnastics friends.  And I was so beaming proud of my Samuel!

Samuel was one of the oldest in the 18 months to 3 years old class.  By now, he had been around the block a few times and was pretty comfortable with the class and Teacher Deena.  She was great about asking Sam for help, having him demonstrate, and giving him things to do that were a bit trickier.  Sam might have let that get to his head a bit.

(Have you noticed Sam’s socks yet?  He NEEEEDED a red race car sock so he could go very fast at gymnastics like McQueen.)

In the fall session, we had several other friends in our class.  So this time Sam spent the first few weeks asking where Gavin and Jacob were.  We were so glad cutie pie Leah was still there, though!

At the end, everyone got a medal.  Sam thought it was oh so cool.  He came home and proudly hung it from the shelf in his room.

It was so super cute, and it was so super fun to watch my crazy little boy who is so super grown up!  We can’t wait until next fall when it starts up again!!

Dear Samuel,

Today I heard you wake up at 8:00.  Your little brother was miraculously still sleeping, so I decided to wait for you to come get me out of bed.  As I fell back to sleep, I heard you playing and talking and making noise, and didn’t think much of it.  Forty five minutes later, I heard Owen wake up.  I came downstairs to find you snuggled up on the sofa with your blankets, the TV on, a stool pushed up to the counter, a cup of milk and a yogurt on your table, and Dad’s RC truck (that is kept hidden in his office) in the middle of the floor.  You greeted me with “Hi, Mommy, I’m awake!” and I wanted time to stop for just a little bit.  How did you grow up so fast?

Your imagination is out of this world, and listening to you play is one of my life’s little pleasures.  I am fascinated by the things you come up with, I am blown away by the stories you create, and I am so entertained by all the funny and smart things you say.  You love to help and want to be involved in everything that goes on around you.  You have a few good friends who you talk about all the time, and who you often ask to play with.  Just a few weeks ago, your little buddy Nathan knocked on our door and asked if you could come out and ride bikes.  How did you grow up so fast?

Dad calls you Master of the Obvious when you say things like “Hi Mom, I’m sitting in the window” as you sit in the window, “Dad, I got out your truck to play with” as you play with Dad’s truck, “I’m awake” as if we might think otherwise after hearing you crash your monster trucks in the window for the 67th time, or when you holler from the bathroom, “I’m going pee-pee now!!”  We sure can’t fault you for your honesty.  But how did you grow up so fast?

You now enjoy going to Sunbeams every Sunday.  You are learning so many things about the gospel and your prayers are so sweet.  I was surprised when I sang the Primary song we’ve been learning this month, and you knew the whole thing.  You ask to go to the library almost every day.  Each time, you know exactly what books you want to look up –sharks, monster trucks, and dinosaurs are your favorite.  You love to read books with us—always before a nap and bedtime— but you will also sit quietly and read to yourself.  Most of your favorite books you can “read” word for word.  You get so excited going to preschool each week.  I am always proud to watch you bounce in the door with your little backpack, and a little bit sad that you don’t even need to look back.  How did you grow up so fast?

You are opinionated, stubborn, and so very bossy.  You stomp your foot and tell me “NO!” more times a day than I can count, you push my buttons, you take me to the limit and then a little bit farther, and when I say “Samuel, you do that one more time . . . !“ you look me dead in the eye.  And do it one more time.  How did you grow up so fast?

Samuel, I’ve said it from the day you were born.  You are the smartest, brightest, cutest, funniest, most amazing little boy I know.  You bring a very special light to our family, and we are so blessed to have you.  Oh, how I love you!  Don’t grow up too fast.

Love, Mom

{You love to proudly display your work on the fridge.  You also think it’s funny to hold something in front of your face when I want to take your picture.}

{We’ve decided that you and your baby brother’s bums are the same size.  You get so mad when your pants slip down.}

{“I’m skiing in the Lympics!”}

{Racing slot cars with Daddy.}

{Yes, we really do love you!}
