Our Basement is Haunted

May 19th, 2012 Annelise Posted in Brothers, Owen Says, playing, pretend, videos No Comments »

The boys love playing in the basement.  The laundry is down there, and there is also one finished room that we very loosely dub "the guest room."  It has a pull out sofa, a table and closet piled high and stuffed full of my sewing and craft stuff, and then everything else that doesn't have a place gets dumped down there, too.  Because there is soooo much to get into, I hesitate to send the boys down there on their own, but when I need a break and they've already exhasuted the backyard, I unlock the gate on the stairs and shove them down.  And they love it.  Their imaginations go wild down there.

One afternoon in particular, they were having quite the adventures.  Samuel came up several times to ask me if I wanted to see the spider web he was making.  He would check in every few minutes to tell me it was getting bigger and bigger.  Oh boy.  "It sounds pretty cool, Sam, I just hope you're not doing anything naughty.  I will come see it as soon as the dishwasher is empty."  But after a while, he stopped asking, so I figured I could get a bit more done before needing to investigate.

Later, Owen came up to go potty, and told me, "Sam is the best fireman, he puts out all the fires so strong!"  A while later, I heard Sam explaining to O, "When you rescue things from the fire, you put them over your shoulders like this," and then they both came upstairs out of breath and hollering about rescuing the dogs from the burning building.  I got them to hold still long enough for a picture on my phone before they had to "go back to see if there were any survivors."

Once the fire was safely put out, and the heroes had saved the day, there were some "ghostes" that needed to be "killed."  Not one to intrude, I didn't feel the need to explain that ghosts are already dead.

So a good while later, I heard screams of terror.  Followed by sobbing and more screaming.  I booked it, this was the real deal, something was seriously wrong.  As I was running down the stairs, Sam was running up to get me, panting, "Mom!!!  Owen's stuck!!!!!"  By the time I made it down, maybe 17 seconds after the screaming started, O was full blown out of control terrified.  "I'm stuck, I'm stuck, I'm stuck, the ghost is going to get me!!!!"  Yes, he was stuck.  In the "spider web" which turned out to be a roll of yarn wrapped around every single thing in that horific basement, from one end to the other.  Owen had gotten his legs caught, and every time he moved, it got a bit tighter.  It was also connected to one of my clothes drying racks, which had a jacket hanging on it, and moved and shook each time he tried to get free.  Once I got him unstuck, Owen practically jumped into my arms, grabbed around my neck, and didn't let go until we were safely upstairs.  He was seriously shaken up about this!!  He calmed down quickly, though, and then had lots and lots to say about the event.  He talked about it the rest of the day.  And every time we've gone into the basement since.  He points to to drying rack and says, "That's where the ghost was, he was going to get me."

These two boys crack me up.  They are so so fun.  I love how bright and full of life they are.  When they're not yelling at each other or beating each other up, they sure are good little buddies.

In the Tub

April 1st, 2012 Annelise Posted in around the house, Little O-Man, Mr. Sammers, playing No Comments »

Usually Samuel and Owen love bathtime together.  They can get a little out of control, and there is always a small squabble or two, but for sharing such a small space with limited things to do, I am always impressed with how well they get along in there and for how long.  But that doesn't stop them from enjoying the rare occasion when they get the tub to themselves.

Samuel is such a fish.  We have to remind him often that the tub is not a pool.  He has zero inhibitions about diving, rolling around, and counting how long he can hold his breath.

Owen is a little more timid about the water, and is just recently starting to put his face in and lie all the way back on his own.  One afternoon while Sam was at a friend's and Emmett was napping, Owen played in that tub for an hour!!  I finally dragged him out, afraid he might dissolve if I left him much longer.  O would've stayed in there all day if I let him.

Let’s be done with January!

February 20th, 2012 Annelise Posted in friends, goings-on, month wrap up, playing, potty, snow, winter No Comments »

Ok, so here are a few other things from January . . . the long, cold, boring month of January.  Thank goodness it's over.  And that I'm finally documenting it 3 weeks later.

Sofa cushion mountains/forts are one of the boys' favorite things to do.

Lots of play dates with friends to keep us busy.

Rockin' a killer outfit.

Chubbs helping with the laundry.

Owen making sure Em was sufficiently entertained.

Potty training!!!  I'm not sure what O is showing you . . . probably the number of times he peed on the floor that day.

A little bit more snow.  He was "building a fortress to proctect us from the trolls."

Sam helping me make dinner.  I was whining about how much I hate cutting onions.  Samuel saved the day with his matter-of-fact solution, "We just need our sunglasses on!"

Bouncin’ Babe

November 26th, 2011 Annelise Posted in Emmett M, playing No Comments »

I cannot get over the cuteness of this chubby lovey.  Em will hang out in his bouncer, sinking lower and lower, while his feet kick higher and higher.  After a bit he will quiet down and zone out.  But as soon as I peek over at him, he gets a humungo fat faced grin and starts bouncing again.  Lovey love love.

(Clearly I need to work on my focusing skills.  And my picture taking skills in general, but whatever.)

Line ‘em Up

July 11th, 2011 Annelise Posted in around the house, Little O-Man, playing No Comments »

Owen is usually a good napper, so that often means he gets an hour or so in the evening to play by himself while Sam goes to bed first.  This is often O's best time of the day.  The family room window is still the numero uno top choice place to play, and Owen particularly enjoys it when he doesn't have to fight for it.  It makes a great place to line up some dinosaurs, wouldn't you say?

Snow Day

December 29th, 2010 Annelise Posted in friends, outside, playing, snow No Comments »

December 21, 2010

The forecast the night before was for cold rain to melt the little bit of snow that was still hanging around from a previous storm.  Ehhh, wrong!  We woke up Tuesday morning to a big ol’ dumping of snow!  Sam was giddy.  Owen was in awe.  The local schools were closed for the first time in 35 years!  (Preschool was only delayed an hour.)  It was beautiful!  Until I had to shovel the whole driveway so we could even get out.  Samuel was dyyyyyying to get out there and play, so after school and lunch, he and I bundled up while Owen napped.  First on Sam’s list was snow angels.  Next was apparently snow balls, but he quickly learned you don’t engage in a snowball fight unless BOTH parties are willing to particpate.  Then it was time for a snow man, and quick stop by from Grandpa W.  (More snowballs!)

Later that afternoon, Sam wanted to go out again so he asked his neighbor buddy to come play with him.  Both us Moms figured the boys would make it maybe 10 minutes before whines of cold fingers and wet toes.  Ehhh, wrong again!  They played in our backyard for almost an hour and a half!!  They pushed trucks around, trudged through the snow, played in the covered club house, and dug out a fort in the bushes.  It was a very very successful snow day.  I might not be ready to move to CA just yet!

The backyard.  I should’ve taken a picture of Erik’s car completely buried in our driveway that I got to dig out.

Samuel with Samsam the Snowman.

I gave Sam permission to have a snowball fight with Samsam the Snowman.

So much fun!  He couldn’t stop licking and eating the snow.

I spy a Bubba Lumps watching from the warmth of the window!

Marbles

November 7, 2010

One evening while I made dinner, Erik and the boys got out the marbles! These are Erik’s from when he was a kid, and both Sam and Owen are wild about them. I’ve gotten out 4 or 5 pieces at a time before, and built a small tower. But this was the real deal! All THREE boys had fun. ;) And it was such a delight to stand in the doorway and be an observer. Look at how into Erik is. Look at Owen’s hat that he won’t go a day without wearing. Look at Sam who insists on dressing himself. Look at how intense all of them are, and how seriously they are taking their fun. Look at how blessed I am to call all three of these guys mine! Love love love.

South Ridge Farms

October 23rd, 2010 Annelise Posted in autumn, friends, outings, playing 1 Comment »

October 8, 2010

With fall in the air, we put together a big group of friends for a visit to South Ridge Farms, aka The Big Red Barn.  The cold and rain parted just as we pulled in, and we had a beautiful sunny afternoon to enjoy our little trip.  It only took about 20 minutes to get everyone gathered, loaded on the wagon, unloaded for several little boys to go potty, and loaded again, finally ready to go on our hay ride.  We took a 10 minute ride over to the pumpkin patch where we were let lose.  There was a little maze, some trucks, a couple photo ops, and lots of pumpkins.  The boys and I went out to the patch, and I told Samuel he could pick any pumpkin he could carry back to the wagon.  He was very deliberate about his choice, and he flip flopped a few times before he found THE one.  Then we rode back to the farm to explore the beautiful barn.  It had a darling store and a giant cooler full of apples and other fruits.  We all gathered in the dining area for our donuts that came with the hay ride.  Each of the kids also got to go home with a coloring book.  It was another great adventure with good friends and fun memories.  I love this time of year!

O in the maze.  He was totally posing for me.  Sam took off and made it through the maze all by himself.

“Uh-llo??”  “Boooooo!”

Desperately trying to get a photo of the two.  It’s truly hopeless.

Someone shared a snack with Samuel.  But Samuel wouldn’t share with Owen.

The whole group.

Donut time.  Samuel with Gavin and “My buddy Nathan.”

Lunch break with Gabers.

Playing on the hay wagon.  Gorgeous.

Something Old, Something New

August 11th, 2010 Annelise Posted in boys!, Little O-Man, outside, playing, something new, videos 2 Comments »

Owen started small a while ago, (this is from the end of June) but has since moved on to the slides at the park and completely mastered those, so this must be getting old . . .

Which must be why he decided to try something new . . .
