Halloween Weekend

October 28-31, 2011

Such a fun fun weekend.  I love having special things to do and I love our family.  So put them together, and it's a great combination.

Friday I had Erik take off work, since Sam had the day off school and his family was coming into town that day.  And that evening was our ward Halloween party.  The boys were super excited to dress up.  Owen's favorite thing about his costume was his tail.  Anyone who talked to him over the next 4 days while he was in costume heard about it.  "Ha, yeah, I got a tail, see it's right here."  I was surprised how often I had to explain that Em was a wizard.  Whatever.  The boys were so well behaved all night.  They waited in line patiently for chili and hots dogs, ate their dinner, helped clean up, sat perfectly still and listened intently to the police officer's safety speech, and followed the crowd nicely during the trunk-or-treat.  It was particularly fun for me to watch Owen, who took it all in silently and seriously, but very keenly aware of everything that was going on.  It was great to have Erik's parents with us there, too.

Saturday afternoon the Mutters arrived.  We had first planned to go up to Thansksgiving Point for Cornbelly's then decided to stay local.  We went just up the street to Jaker's Pumpkin Patch, where they had two different sized mazes, a hay pyramid, a petting zoo, corn pit, and a tractor ride.  We got some pumpkins, then spent the rest of the day at our home and in the backyard.

Sunday was the reason for family being in town.  At church, Emmett was given a name and blessing by his father, with both of his grandfathers, and a few close friends in the circle.  Afterwards we had all of our family and friends over to our home for a little brunch.  It was so fun to have everyone together to celebrate our newest little guy.  I was once again very touched by how much love and support our friends and family offer us.  We are so so blessed.  But gosh darn it, we didn't get a single family picture.  And I only got one picture of Emmett at that!!  Kind of makes me a bit sick to my stomach actually that I missed out on that big time.  But at least we still have the memories, right?!

That night, Sam and I figured we had better carve the pumpkins.  Erik was at a church meeting, and Owen wanted nothing to do with it.  So Sam and I had ourselves a grand ol' time.

Then Monday was Halloween!!  I seriously love Halloween.  We had one last gymnastics class that morning, then Sam went to school.  A bit later, the other two boys and I met him there for a Halloween program.  It was silly but sweet.  Samuel was so very concerned I wouldn't be there.  When I came in, I waved to him, but he must not have seen me, because when they all stood up to start, he was very close to tears and said, "But my mom isn't here yet!"  So I called out, "Of course I am, I'm right here Sam!!" and that time he saw me.  And the relief that washed over his face might have made my heart flutter a bit.  So after the program and sharing treats, we decided to visit Erik at work.  Erik was cute, and took the boys around to show them off.  Some of the ladies thought they needed to give them candy, so it was a good start to the trick-or-treating.  One guy thought they needed a trick instead of a treat, so he gave them each a whistle.  Yeah, thanks for that!

At home again, we made dinner and waited for Erik to get home.  We gobbled down our pigs in a blanket and set up the tripod super quick so I could have at least one picture of all 5 of us from the weekend.  Definitely not our best.  But whatever.  Erik took the two older boys out trick-or-treating.  I wish I could've gone, too, but we figured it was be best for me to stay home with the baby and hand out candy.  Once they got back, Samuel and Owen were both just as excited to hand out the candy as they'd been to get it.  By 8:30 the candy was gone, so we turned off the lights and enjoyed a little time going through the loot before sending the hopped up boys to bed.

Halloween in Parts: Saturday

Saturday the 30th started off as a beautiful sunny day.  But later in the afternoon, the clouds came in.  By 5:00 it was raining, and by 6:00 is was super windy and downpouring.  A major bummer for all Springville, Utah trick-or-treaters, I’m sure.  Once it slowed down a bit, we figured we would make a quick round to appease the Fireman beast who was bouncing of the walls and ceilings with the Halloween ants in his pants.  Erik hates holidays and people, so he wasn’t going to stay home and pass out candy.  But I wasn’t going to let them go and have all the fun without me.  So we decided to brave it out all together.  Sam was ready in his rainboots, Owen was wrapped up in several blankets, and we were ready to go.

The first few minutes were still wet cold and windy.  But by maybe the 4th house or so, it all let up.  The streets filled quickly, and it was officially Halloween (or as official as it would get in Utah with the holiday falling on a Sunday.)  Owen was a champ the whole time.  He fussed a bit about halfway through, but that was fixed pretty quick with a Dum Dum.  Then Sam had to go potty.  Perfect time to hit up Jacob’s house.  “Trick or treat, smell my feet, may I use your potty seat?”  And back to more candy collecting.  We made it almost around the whole neighborhood before Sam started saying he was ready to go home.  We pushed him to finish up the houses on the other side of our street, but he was sidetracked by his full bucket, and kept stopping to investigate the loot.  We got home to an empty bowl of candy on our front step.  (Which, to be honest, ticks me off.  If the sign says Take One, then take ONE!  No way we had 240 kids come by in half an hour.)  Sam was eager to dump out his bucket and dig in.  He spent the rest of the night surprisingly mellow and calm on the sofa, watching Spookly the Square Pumpkin, and learning the art of Fun Dip.

Halloween in Parts: Friday

Friday was Samuel’s preschool Halloween party.  Sam was really excited for it.  He loved seeing Ms. Laura and all of his school buddies in their costumes.  Of course, Jacob was still his best buddy there.  All of the kids did a short program for everyone else there.  They read their Halloween book and sang a couple songs with their witch puppet.  (Sam tried his hardest to get Jacob to come up front with him for all the different things that monring, but ended up staying back with his buddy, who is a bit more reserved than in-your-face Mr. Samuelson.)  Then it was time for trick-or-treating around the cul-de-sac.  Owen was a grump, but Sam was more than happy to make the rounds a  few times all by himself.  Then all the kids gathered back together for a special visitor . . . a REAL witch!!!  She brewed up a potion in her cauldron, complete with dragon blood, bone dust, eyeballs, bats, and worms, and out came goodie bags for all the kids.  It was beyond cute, and Sam was totally enthralled.  I have a ridiculous number of pictures, because we had a ridiculous amount of . . . say it with me . . . FUN!

These two are so cute together.

This one is cute, too, even by himself.

Samuel really liked Joey’s dinosaur costume.

“Green goblin, green goblin, what do you see??  I see a black bat looking at me . . . “

Darling darling darling.  All of it.  I wish I had thought to bring my video camera!

Trick or Treating.

Here comes the witch!  Samuel loved her.  He kept telling me, “She’s a nice witch, and I’m not scared of her.”

Jacob, Ms. Laura, and Samuel.

It was really neat but also a bit strange to watch Samuel interact with his teacher and all of these kids who I hardly know, but he spends hours with each week.  It’s a big mish mash of emotions that are really hard for me to explain, but it’s all very new to me and I want to remember every detail.  I hate how much I forget.  I am surprised every day by how much and how quickly Samuel is growing up.  He is so bright, he has such a big heart, and he is so so FUN!

Our first official debut for the boys’ costumes was at our ward Halloween party.  I do believe we are the only LDS ward in the United States that doesn’t do a Trunk-or-Treat.  I was privvy to the meeting where it was discussed and conclusion made that “we” don’t want to teach the children to go to cars for candy.  Hmph.  Oh well.  It was still a great night with a Chili Cookoff (I might have been THE first place winner!  What?!), costume parade, and “trick-or-treating” to decorated tables.  We love our ward a ton and it’s been great to put some roots in!  We had a super fun night kicking off the Halloween festivities.

Getting ready.  This might be my favorite picture of Sweet Little Owen.  It’s so him!  And Sam, of course, wanted no help putting all the pieces of his costumer together and on.

The adventures of posing pictures.  Ugh.

And . . .

We . . .

Are . . .

Done . . .

Sam and his buddy Gabe marching in the costume parade.

Who knows what he’s crying about this time!  Maybe it’s that his Mom is such a nerd.  Ar har.

Owen was mesmerized fascinated and enthralled with this display.  He stood there all night just staring pointing and talking to it.

Me and my award winning chili that beat out like 30 other pots, 1st place prize in hand.  A king size Twix.  Just look at that pic!  It’s so sad you all can’t be as cool as me.
